Today it is considered to be a fundamental substance which acts as an antioxidant and anti-infl ammatory agent in the serum. It can neutralize free radicals and prevent peroxidation of lipids. In addition there is evidence that it protects the cardiovascular system, neuronal systems, the hepatobiliary system, the pulmonary system and the immune system. Recently the use of pharmacological agents which augment expression of Heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) has been investigated. Consequently its metabolites such as carbon monoxide (CO), biliverdin (BV) and bilirubin (BR) could become parts of a therapeutic strategy for treatment of various infl ammatory illnesses

New Aspects of Bilirubin Effects in Health and Disease: a Review

Bilirubin belongs to a phylogenetically old superfamily of tetrapyrrolic compounds. Although for decades bilirubin was believed to be only a waste product of the heme catabolic pathway and a potentially toxic compound; recent data has convincingly demonstrated that mildly elevated serum bilirubin levels are strongly associated with a lower prevalence of oxidative stress-mediated diseases, such ...

Correlation of Serum Bilirubin with Inflammatory Marker hsCRP in Metabolic Syndrome Disorder

In India the incidence and prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) are on the rise as suggested by various surveys [1]. Different cross sectional and longitudinal studies revealed that MS is strongly associated with inflammation [2-4]. Increased proinflammatory cytokines are seen in patients of MS. The increases in proinflammatory cytokines, including Interleukin-1 (IL-1), Interleukin-6(IL-6), In...

Intraperitoneal bilirubin administration decreases infarct area in a rat coronary ischemia/reperfusion model

Bilirubin was previously considered a toxin byproduct of heme catabolism. However, a mounting body of evidence suggests that at physiological doses, bilirubin is a powerful antioxidant and anti-atherosclerotic agent. Recent clinical studies have shown that human beings with genetically-induced hyperbilirubinemia (Gilbert Syndrome) are protected against coronary heart disease. The purpose of thi...
